To begin, Queen's Pre-Law Society would like to acknowledge we are on the traditional territory of the Anishinabek Nation and Haudenosaunee Confederacy. It is our understanding that this territory is included in the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy and the Confederacy of the Ojibwe and Allied Nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. As a club, we would like to acknowledge how this territory is significant to the Indigenous Peoples who have lived and continue to live on this land. We would also like to acknowledge how their practices and spiritualities are tied to the land and continue to develop in relationship to the territory and its other inhabitants today.

QPLS is focused on educating people about the law while fostering a welcoming and diverse community within Queen’s. We recognize how the law can play an imperative role in human rights-related issues, especially ones experienced by Indigenous peoples in Canada. Our partnership with Raven Trust, a registered charity committed to raising legal defence funds, assists First Nations communities in enforcing their rights and titles to protect traditional territories and is one way our club is committed to reconciliation.

We as a club are grateful to be able to live, learn and play on these lands, and as uninvited guests, we recognize our work is ongoing. We are receptive to feedback that will allow our club to best foster, respect, and strengthen meaningful relations with Indigenous communities across this land.

Mentorship Program

The Mentorship Program is a pillar in QPLS Culture. It is designed for current law students from any university in Canada to volunteer some of their time and knowledge to undergraduate students at Queen’s University who are interested in pursuing law school. Mentors can meet with their assigned mentee(s) either in person or via Zoom. The program is very flexible since you can choose to meet with your mentee whenever it fits in your schedule, and as frequently as you decide. Each mentor will have around two mentees. Mentors primarily give general insight into law school, providing guidance, and answering questions about law school related admissions. Mentors are not expected to be an LSAT tutor, more of a general advisor for the process. Depending on your mentee, they may be a first-year student simply looking for answers as to whether law school is a good fit for them, or a fourth-year student who may need help with a personal essay for their applications.

This program is an excellent mentorship opportunity for those who enjoy helping others and partaking in leadership opportunities. Besides receiving the personal fulfillment of helping an undergraduate student shape their future, the program is also an excellent networking opportunity for law students. At the beginning and the end of the academic year, the Queen’s Pre-Law Society will facilitate two networking events with refreshments and treats for those residing in Kingston, Ontario. Besides a physical networking event, we will compile a database of our mentors, their school, internships, and personal interests in order to promote professional networking. Using this database, the law students can connect with their peers and talk about summer employment, company experiences, or just any mutual traits!

We are currently undertaking an expansion of the Mentorship Program to provide even more value to General Members, more to be announced shortly.

For more information on the mentorship program, please feel free to contact our Outreach Team.
